Sunday, February 10 – Quarrybank

I have to see Tom again this morning – this time at the ‘Cock Hotel’ Stretford 10am.  I got there in easy time, and so together, we made for Altrincham.  The morn was turning out bright and sunny when we dropped down to Bucklow Hill and made for Lymm, then Thelwall, and cutting out the Warrington road, we ran through Grappenhall to Stockton Heath, and the Warrington – Chester road.

Along here we meandered, until passing through Daresbury, we came to Sutton Weaver.  A comfortable little cottage provided us with lunch, whilst we chatted the time away talking with two Atherton Wheelers, who afterwards accompanied us to our turning, just beyond Frodsham.  Our road, the same as that taken on the Helsby Point run of January 6th led us between the two headlands.  Again we turned for Manley, and once more we reached Mouldsworth.  This time we kept straight along, skirting the Ashton Hayes estate.  At length we reached Kelsall, on the Watling Street, from where we joined the Tarporley road, through Willington.  At Quarrybank we left it in favour of a bylane with an atrocious surface.  This led us a merry dance along the ridge of Kelsborough hills, giving us some fine views, all the way back to Kelsall.  Still another bylane took us to a private path, which we shamelessly traversed to Delamere Station.  Then the downhill run through Norley and Crowley to Mrs Wade’s at Acton Bridge, for tea.  After tea, we took the winding, twisting lanes through Little Leigh to Comberbach, pretty, old world Budworth, then High Legh and Warburton.  The main road through Irlam brought us to Patricroft, where we separated.                                90 miles
