Overdue re-vamp of ‘The Books’

This section of the website has been overdue for a refresh for some considerable time now – but at long last I’ve been able to get to it. Highlights are

  • Separate pages for each of the volumes one and two
  • Updated the cover image for volume 1 – now uses the image from the 2nd Edition
Unfortunately I am still in negotiation with David about what information it might be possible to ‘leak’ to you about the work that is currently in hand for volumes three and four – so I’ve had to hold those pages back for now. However, I can tell you that work is well in hand and I hope to have some more news for you soon.

  1. Thanks Allstair,
Volumes 1 and 2 are gems. I’m confident 3 and 4 will be worth the wait.

  2. Probably the best books ever written about cycle touring in this period. I have two volumes of Davie Bell’s Highwayman writings, and although there is more of it, being culled from regular newspaper articles, I don’t think they come up to Charlie’s prose. I look forward to Vols 3 & 4.

    • Welcome David Rodd, and thank you for your encouraging comment. David Warner is working hard on volume 3 just now, so keep checking in.
      Kind regards, Fiona

      • I now have volume 2, and it confirms my opinion of Charlie’s prose. Chapter 2 is superb. Although his preface dated Feb 1928 is addressed to “readers”, he does not seem to have taken any steps to seek publication, what he writes is of the highest quality, and I would put it on par with Kuklos’s published work. What a pity he was not encouraged to publish; just think how much more there might have been.
