Sunday, January 20 1924 Alderley Edge

I have to scout out my run for next Saturday, today, so in company with three others, I started from Four Lane Ends at 9.20, with a high wind behind us.  Reaching Walkden, we sped down to Barton Bridge, then Stretford, and so via Chorlton to Didsbury, where we broke away into parties of two – each party having to scout a run for next weekend.  Turning up Palatine road, the two of us soon reached Northenden, turning here for Styal, but leaving that road for one, which, after many thousands of setts, brought us to Ringway, and Mrs Woodward’s for lunch.

At 2pm we took the Altrincham – Wilmslow road, by the common, to the churchyard which we entered in search of unusual epitaphs.  We found none.  Later we had a pretty ride to Prestbury, and a still prettier run through the dense woods behind Alderley Edge, to Alderley Cross.  As it was yet far too early for tea, we took a walk as far as the ‘Wizard’, returning by way of a glorious little vale, and the copper mines.  At Mrs Powell’s we found the other two – brother and sister – in company with another club member.  Tea proved a merry affair, the lady present noting that whenever we poured out the tea, we splashed the cloth.  We blamed the teapot.  I have noticed before that I always get a pot that pours very erratically.  We returned along the main road via Wilmslow, Handforth, Cheadle and Didsbury, to Stretford, Barton and Walkden, with a helping wind, and a fine moonlight night, reaching home at 9pm, after a glorious day out.                                                                                                 75 miles
